BA LLB Eligibility Criteria: Age Limit, Marks & Subjects Explained

No age limit for BA LLB, 45% in Class 12, any stream. Check BA LLB eligibility criteria, CLAT & AILET rules and state university options. Start with Anushram.

If you are planning a law career right after school, the first question is simple: am I eligible? The good news is that the ba llb eligibility criteria in India are more open than most students expect. You do not need a specific stream, and right now there is no upper age limit for BA LLB.

Quick answer: To join a 5-year BA LLB, you must pass Class 12 (any stream) from a recognised board, usually with at least 45% marks (40% for SC/ST/PwD at National Law Universities). There is currently no enforced age limit for BA LLB. Admission happens through an entrance exam such as CLAT or AILET, or on Class 12 merit at some state law universities.

QualificationClass 12 / 10+2 or equivalent, any stream

What Is the BA LLB Eligibility Criteria in 2026?

The ba llb eligibility criteria are the minimum conditions a student must meet to join the 5-year integrated law degree. The Bar Council of India (BCI) regulates legal education, while each university or entrance body sets its own exact cut-offs within those rules.

For the current admission cycle, the Consortium of NLUs asks for three things. You must have passed 10+2 or an equivalent exam. You need at least 45% marks, or 40% if you are SC/ST/PwD. And there is no upper age bar.

Students still in Class 12 can also apply. Under CLAT 2027 rules, candidates writing their board exams in March or April 2027 may register, but must show proof of passing at admission time. Miss that proof, and the seat goes.

Think of eligibility as the entry ticket, not the finish line. Many law students later move into LLM, judicial services or research, where writing skills decide outcomes. BA LLB Age Limit: Is There a Maximum Age?

No. There is currently no enforced BA LLB age limit in India. A 17-year-old school leaver and a 35-year-old career changer can both apply, as long as they meet the marks rule.

Here is why this question keeps coming up. In 2016, the BCI notified an upper LLB age limit of 22 years for the 5-year course and 45 years for the 3-year course. In March 2017, the Supreme Court stayed that notification, which opened law courses to candidates of any age.

The case is still pending. In September 2026, a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant asked the BCI whether it is willing to withdraw the cap. The BCI argued the limit exists because most 5-year courses are residential. Justice Bagchi questioned whether that is a valid reason, noting that not all such courses are residential.

So, what is the maximum age limit for LLB in India today? In practice, none. CLAT, AILET and state law universities all accept applicants without an upper age bar. Because the matter is before the Supreme Court, check the official notice each year before you apply.

Tip for older applicants: If you already hold a degree, the 3-year LLB may suit you better. The age limit for BA LLB and the 3-year LLB age limit are both stayed, so the choice comes down to time and cost, not age.

Minimum Marks Required for BA LLB Admission

Most routes ask for 45% in Class 12 for General and OBC candidates and 40% for SC/ST/PwD. The table shows how the main admission routes compare.

CLAT (NLUs and many private colleges)45% General/OBC; 40% SC/ST/PwDCLAT rank
AILET (NLU Delhi)45%, with relaxation for reserved categoriesAILET rank
TNDALU affiliated colleges (Tamil Nadu)45% General/OBC; 40% SC/STClass 12 merit
KSLU affiliated colleges (Karnataka)As notified each yearClass 12 merit

A minimum is not a cut-off. In Tamil Nadu, the 2026 second-counselling cut-off for OC candidates at government law colleges was 93.25%. Popular seats close far above the 45% floor, so aim high in your boards.

A quick note on percentages: "equivalent grade" counts. If your board gives CGPA, convert it using the board's official formula, not a rough guess.

Which Subjects Are Needed in Class 12 for BA LLB?

None are compulsory. Arts, Commerce and Science students are all eligible, and CLAT does not restrict any stream. What matters is your aggregate percentage, not which subjects made it up.

That said, some subjects make the course easier. English sharpens the reading speed every law exam tests. Political Science and History build a base for constitutional law. Economics helps with competition and tax law later. Always read your chosen college's prospectus, because a few private institutes add their own conditions.

State universities students often ask about

Many students search for BA LLB at universities they already know. Here is how those options actually work:

  • Kuvempu University: In Karnataka, 5-year law colleges come under Karnataka State Law University (KSLU), set up in 2009. Students near kuvempu university apply to KSLU-affiliated colleges, where seats go on Class 12 merit.
  • Periyar University and Thiruvalluvar University: In Tamil Nadu, BA LLB is run through Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University (TNDALU) and its affiliated government law colleges. Students in the Periyar University or thiruvalluvar university regions apply through TNDALU counselling.
  • Anna University: It is a technical university focused on engineering and technology, so it does not run BA LLB. Tamil Nadu aspirants should look at TNDALU instead.
  • Universities in Delhi: The Faculty of Law at Delhi University began BA LLB (Hons) in 2023-24 with admission through CLAT. NLU Delhi admits through AILET. Other universities in delhi, such as GGSIPU, run BA LLB through affiliated colleges; check their current notices.

CLAT covers English, Current Affairs and GK, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques. It opens doors to 26 National Law Universities, Delhi University's BA LLB and many private colleges.

AILET is used only by NLU Delhi. It is a separate exam, so serious aspirants usually prepare for both.

LSAT India was dropped by LSAC as a business decision, with no replacement planned. Private universities that used it now run their own tests or accept CLAT scores.
