Top PhD Entrance Exams in India 2026

Every PhD entrance exam in India for 2026: UGC NET, CSIR NET, GATE, JNU, DU, BHU, Anna University & more. Dates, eligibility, tips. Get free guidance.

Quick answer: The most important phd entrance exam in india for 2026 is UGC NET, followed by CSIR NET for science and GATE for engineering. Since 2024, the UGC allows universities to admit PhD scholars on NET scores instead of their own tests, so most central universities, including JNU, DU and BHU, now admit through NET plus an interview. Some state universities still run their own entrance exam for phd admission.

So, for phd which exam is required? It depends on your subject and your target university. This guide explains every route, with verified 2026 dates, so you can pick the right exam and stop guessing.

List of Top PhD Entrance Exams in India 2026

Every phd entrance exam in india falls into one of two groups: national tests run by a central body, and a university entrance exam for PhD run by the institution itself. The table below lists each phd entrance exam name, who conducts it, and who should take it.

UGC NETNTAHumanities, social sciences, commerce, management, education, law
Joint CSIR-UGC NETNTAChemical, life, physical, mathematical and earth sciences
GATEIISc and IITs (GATE 2027: IIT Madras)Engineering, technology, science, architecture
Anna University PhD entrance testAnna University Centre for ResearchEngineering, science and management in Tamil Nadu
Kuvempu University PhD entrance testKuvempu UniversityCandidates without NET or GATE in Karnataka
Thiruvalluvar University PhD entranceThiruvalluvar UniversityArts and science research in Vellore region

National scores open the most doors. A valid NET or GATE score is accepted by central universities, IITs and many state universities, while a university-level entrance exam for phd admission only counts at that one institution.

UGC NET vs CSIR NET vs GATE: Which Is Best for PhD?

The best exam is the one that matches your master's subject. Arts, commerce and management scholars should take UGC NET. Pure science scholars should take CSIR NET. Engineering and technology scholars should take GATE.

A useful rule when deciding which entrance exam for phd admission to target: if you are in science and could take either CSIR NET or GATE, take both. GATE's three-year validity gives you a safety net if your first admission cycle does not work out. For PhD which exam is required at a specific university is always confirmed in its own prospectus, so check it before you register.

Eligibility: A master's degree with at least 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwBD) is the standard UGC rule. Final-year master's students can usually sit for NET, but must hold the degree at the time of PhD admission.

Pattern: UGC NET is a 3-hour computer-based test with two papers. Paper 1 covers teaching and research aptitude; Paper 2 covers your subject. There is no negative marking. CSIR NET and GATE are also computer-based, but CSIR NET has negative marking in most sections.

Deadlines are this week. Book a free PhD admission consultation and our experts will check your eligibility before the forms close.

University-Level PhD Entrance Tests (DU, JNU, BHU, IIT)

Most top central universities no longer hold a separate written test. They shortlist on NET or GATE scores and then interview.

  • JNU: For jnu phd admission 2026, the university uses UGC/CSIR NET percentiles from June 2025 onwards. GATE is accepted only for the School of Engineering. There is no separate JNU written test on this route.
  • DU: Delhi University gives 70% weightage to the NET score and 30% to a physical interview. It accepts NET scores from December 2025 and June 2026.
  • BHU: BHU admits through JRF, NET and Direct modes. In NET mode, NET or GATE percentile carries 70% and the interview 30%.
  • IITs: Most IITs shortlist on GATE, NET-JRF or equivalent scores, then hold a department-level written test and/or interview, with intakes in July and January.

Among universities in delhi, JNU and DU are now fully NET-driven, so a strong NET percentile matters more than ever. Other universities in delhi, such as Jamia Millia Islamia, publish their own rules each cycle.

State universities that still run their own test

If you do not hold NET or GATE, a university entrance exam for PhD is still your route:

  • Anna University, Chennai: a written test (70%) plus an interview (30%), held twice a year.

Kuvempu University, Shivamogga: runs its own PhD entrance test for candidates without UGC NET or GATE, followed by an interview. Kuvempu University exempts NET/JRF holders from the test.

  • Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore: admits through its own PhD entrance and interview, with 55% at the master's level. Thiruvalluvar University announces dates on tvu.edu.in.

How to Crack PhD Entrance Exams in 2026: Expert Tips

After 12+ years of guiding PhD aspirants, our mentors see the same pattern: scholars who clear the exam and the interview plan for both from day one. Here is the approach that works for any phd entrance exam in india.

  1. Lock your exam first. Match the phd entrance exam name to your master's subject and your top three universities. That single step answers "for phd which exam is required" for you.
  2. Master Paper 1 early. In UGC NET, Paper 1 is common to all subjects and is the easiest place to gain marks. Practise research aptitude, data interpretation and reasoning daily.
  3. Solve five years of past papers. NTA repeats concepts often. Time each paper at the real 3-hour limit.
  4. Write your research proposal now. With 30% weightage on the interview at DU, JNU and BHU, a clear 2-page synopsis can decide your rank. A university entrance exam for PhD also ends with this same interview.
  5. Rehearse the interview. Panels ask why your topic matters, which method you will use, and what you have read.

Practise with real PhD panelists. Join an Anushram mock viva and walk into your interview prepared.
